Location for the first severe wind test of the Airbus A380 2006-07. The Spanish Chief Pilot of the A380 approached the runway at 45 degrees angle until only seconds before putting the airplane down on the tarmac. The Airport had been closed due to the storm, but a decision had been made to do the the wind landing test anyway, due to the experience of the pilot.

That’s not taking into account our first reki trip when we were arrested in Pakistan and spent 16 days in a torture prison. All in all it was a very eventful project; we were imprisoned, shot at and subjected to extortion, apart from suffering from the general danger and stress involved in shooting a documentary in one of the most dangerous places of the world. The only thing I can say to our defense is that it was our own choice to do it, and we’re happy we did.

Although I already spend most waking hours, writing, recording Voice Over or watching rough-cuts, I have a feeling that this project will take up even more of my time (in a good way :) soon.

Here is a selection of stills I took on the first trip (of 3). It’s a bit sad, look at it from a photographer’s perspective, as I several times in the recent past have had the privilege to arrive at amazing locations, but seldom have the time to really focus on photography, but instead spend my time with an inferior Z1E HDV cam. I love that camera too, but it’s a whole different thing.

it’s tiny. it’s light. maybe not very robust, but i got a little rubber hood to make sure it isn’t exposed to any unnecessary rumble. I’ve dropped a few nikon cameras (lense on) into the tarmac from a meter or so height before, without any devastating effects, but not sure this little guy would actually stand for that. let’s see… or let’s hope we don’t.
I was aiming to get the f1.4 lens, but with the price difference I’m not sure it’s worth it, and after trying the silent engine on the new G f1.4 lens out, I wasn’t to impressed. To be honest I found it sluggish, although I’m sure it must be faster.
Nevertheless, the D3 is superb with fast ISOs, so I doubt I’ll ever need to go faster than 1.8 and it still gives plenty of shallow DOF in good light, when needed.
… so I’m happy.

I can think of many other fun crazy lenses that might be more obvious to covet, but it was a long time since I owned a prime lens and I’m quite looking forward to being limited in options and focusing on framing rather than zooming. Zooming is a convenient drag.

Prime Lense Hurray! or this one..

People rave about the older one, but also say that it’s slightly hazy in the edges. It sounds like it’s a fantastic lens and I’m frankly not sure whether to throw a few more quid on the newer one or gamble for the magic with the older one. Any mythbuster out there tried both?
