A first test (video clip) of a Chinese Dragon animation:
(about 200 layers for the head and another 300 for the body tied together with code. The body will be a lot longer though and there should also be a particle system somehow…)

Location for the first severe wind test of the Airbus A380 2006-07. The Spanish Chief Pilot of the A380 approached the runway at 45 degrees angle until only seconds before putting the airplane down on the tarmac. The Airport had been closed due to the storm, but a decision had been made to do the the wind landing test anyway, due to the experience of the pilot.

Building a Bathroom from Scratch #1

This series of posts will have nothing to do with film or any type of creative media… however, I’m intending to here follow the progress of building a fully fitted “spa-delux-bathroom-with-sauna-and-all-that-jazz” (at least that’s what we’re aiming for from scratch, at the back of the mezzanine, in the converted loft space, which makes up our office. I have missed writing about the first few steps and chunks of work as the project experienced a really timid start and was limping along aimlessly for a worrying amount of time.

I have been taking pictures from the start though and will now try show the progress and write shortly about the type of decisions we had to make, questions we had to answer and problems we had to solve.

These pictures actually only show half the space, so there is the equal amount of open space behind the camera, while the wall will be put up pretty much along the right edge of photo no2.

I should also add that the skylight was recently put in for the purpose of this bathroom. It’s a Velux electric centre swivel type and it’s worth saying that it was a rather pricy affair. The good part was that it was much more quickly done than I even had hoped. Once the roofer guy was on the roof with the window (which nearly costed his life, as he was a bit of a cowboy), it only took a few hours to get the window in place. Never mind that it leaked straight in, which another builder had to fix at a later stage. Needless to say I wasn’t very happy with the guy who did this for us, but he did get the window in place and the mechanics does work, so taking into account that it could have been done even faster and better by a better worker it is still pretty fantastic that one can just pop in a skylight in half a day. And after all there is nothing like natural light, so well in place we’re very happy with it.

The next issue to deal with was the floor, how to keep it sealed and what to do with the walls and ceiling, and how many people needed to be hired to get it all done.

Afghanistan; Adventure Doc Shoot – Trip #2

We spent several years getting this production off the ground and before it screened on FIVE UK (Channel 5) we had done 3 trips to Afghanistan with several months in between. That’s not taking into account our first reki trip when we were arrested in Pakistan and spent 16 days in a torture prison. All in all it was a very eventful project; we were imprisoned, shot at and subjected to extortion, apart from suffering from the general danger and stress involved in shooting a documentary in one of the most dangerous places of the world. The only thing I can say to our defense is that it was our own choice to do it, and we’re happy we did.

Afghanistan; Adventure Doc Shoot – Trip #1

We’ve been editing the feature version of our Afghan Gold “Behind the Scenes” Adventure Doc for a while. Although I already spend most waking hours, writing, recording Voice Over or watching rough-cuts, I have a feeling that this project will take up even more of my time (in a good way soon.

Here is a selection of stills I took on the first trip (of 3). It’s a bit sad, look at it from a photographer’s perspective, as I several times in the recent past have had the privilege to arrive at amazing locations, but seldom have the time to really focus on photography, but instead spend my time with an inferior Z1E HDV cam. I love that camera too, but it’s a whole different thing.

The editing is taking big leaps forward on our afghan feature doc. The rough-cut is now on it’s 2nd or 3rd draft and clocking in just under 2 hours, or just over, depending on how severe we are with “killing darlings”.

Every day we find more good material hidden in the 100 hours of tape, some of which is making it easier to tell the story, but most of which is actually making it more difficult. I’m happy to see though that the story is emerging and new material is automatically finding it’s place now or binned before even making into an edit.

I have now started dabbling with the various graphics we need to tell certain bits of the story.

This is a place holder model for the car that we travel around with.
